THE SARY –CHELEK LAKE

            The  Sary Chelek Lake  is located  in territory of the Sary Chelek Biosphere Reserve, that is  500 kilometers away  from Bishkek and 300 kilometers away from  Osh.  The reserve lies in the Arkit gorge  and  Chaktal mountains. It was established  in 1959 to preserve and explore the pristine flora and fauna of  steppes and mountain ranges, snow-capped peaks, fast rivers and mountain lakes, blooming valleys and alpine meadows.

More than 1,000 species of plants, 10 species of birds and 34 species of mammals (deer, bear, lynx, wolves, foxes, badgers, porcupines, and  snow leopards)  inhabit the Sary-Chelek Biosphere Reserve.  Insect lovers will also be able to find many interesting facts in the Reserve. 

Buffer zone includes the park, rivers  It-Agar and Pacha- Ata, river valleys and villages of Kara-Suu, Khojo-Ata and Avletim.

Glaciers, permafrost places and alpine lakes are located on the northern slopes. Steppe and woody valleys are deeply incised into the gorge, due to the rapid rivers flowing in the Fergana Valley.  The villages   Kyzyl- Tuu, Kashka-Suu and Avletim were settled at the banks of the rivers.

The lake is located at an altitude of 1873 meters above sea level and stretches  for 765 kilometers long and varying in width from 350 meters to 1,500 meters. The deepest point of the lake is 234 meters depth. It is the second deepest lake in Kyrgyzstan. The coastline is deeply indented and lined with dense forests, which are drowned in the depths of the lake.   Small portions of the lake is only   in the larger of the bays. Sea level rises depending on the time of year, it may reach for  about 65 centimeters. The lake is flowed  by  lots of streams, groundwater, and the water of the river Sary Chelek. Stoke is carried out by means of the river Toskool.
